A HISTORY OF DALTON IN 101 OBJECTS

The story of Dalton is rich and complex. The objects below, on display in the lobby of the 89th Street building provide a snapshot of Dalton as it celebrates its 100th year.

We designed a crowdsourcing model to engage the entire community in telling Dalton’s history. What emerged is a fascinating portrait of Dalton as seen through the eyes of its members. Some objects represent enduring traditions; others highlight activities that reaffirm community membership or a sustained relationship to the school over time. Certain objects are vestiges from the past, while other selections represent recent innovations. We aimed for 100 objects for 100 years but as the Dalton community rarely “colors within the lines” our final tally brought us to 101.

The stories behind the objects come from you. What speaks to one generation of Daltonians may be unfamiliar to the next. The long-abandoned tradition of wearing smocks reminds one alum of the comfort she felt wearing this uniform during high school. And, the significance of the object may shift over time. “Go Forth Unafraid” evolves from a simple school motto and song to an anthem providing courage for an alum decades later. Sharing our personal stories links us to each other and to our shared past.

We hope that regardless of your connection to Dalton—as a student, alum, faculty, staff, parent, parent of alumni, grandparent, or friend—you find much to contemplate about your Dalton years. Which objects resonate with you?
